2011 Homeless Count

Each year the Ventura County Homeless & Housing Coalition sponsors a count of the homeless population in the County of Ventura. This enumeration is followed by a survey that collects additional data. The survey targets 20% of the homeless population. Both of these efforts are carried out with volunteers.

This year’s count will take place on January 25, 2011. It will be followed by a survey that will gather additional data at service sites on February 1 through 3.

The counts and surveys that have been conducted in prior years are posted at www.VCHHC.org.

Completing the count continues our eligibility for $2 million in annual HUD funding. The data collected through the count is used by jurisdictions in their annual reports and survey data is utilized for accessing federal, state and private grant monies.
This year in particular we can use more volunteers. Training is provided. Volunteers work in teams and count only in specified locations. Because this is a county-wide effort, people can volunteer wherever they live or work, and they can choose a time of day that suits their schedule.

The count and the survey provide an opportunity for people to stretch their understanding of our community and to have a significant fiscal effort at the same time. You can join the effort by registering at www.VolunteerVenturaCounty.org. Look for the orange "Events” banner in the center of the page and select "learn more” for the 2011 Homeless Count.
